Description

7.23 ct emerald cut, F color, VVS2, IGI certified, measuring 13.41 by 8.67 mm. A 1.55 length to width ratio.

The emerald cut has a long open table and no brilliant faceting to hide behind, so clarity is the grade that decides whether it works. VVS2 is well past the point where that is a question.

Setting an emerald cut

Step cuts want clean geometry around them. Four prongs at the corners, or a bezel that follows the outline, and very little else. The classic alternative is a three stone with tapered baguettes or trapezoids either side, which continues the straight lines instead of interrupting them. Set east-west, the length runs across the finger and the stone reads wider than it is.

Reading the numbers

Emerald cuts run from about 1.30 to 1.60; at 1.55 this one is at the long classic end. The 68.7% depth is deep, which is normal for the cut and is where the corridor effect comes from, light travelling down through the steps and back rather than bouncing off a shallow face. The 63% table keeps that corridor visible instead of flattening it.

Common questions

Why does clarity matter more in an emerald cut?

The large open table works like a window, and step facets give light few places to scatter. Anything inside the stone has less to hide behind. VVS2 means nothing is locatable at ten times magnification, and the gap between VVS and VS only shows at that magnification.

Does an emerald cut sparkle?

Not the way a brilliant does. It returns light in broad planes that switch on and off as the hand moves, rather than in small points of fire.

What length to width ratio should an emerald cut have?

Between 1.30 and 1.60 covers almost all of them. Below 1.30 it starts to read square, above 1.60 it starts to read narrow.

Questions about this piece

Is this a lab grown diamond or a mined diamond?
Lab grown. Every diamond MERVAUX sells is grown in a laboratory rather than mined. It is the same material as a mined diamond, graded on the same scale, and the carat, color and clarity on this page are read exactly the way they would be on a mined stone.
Is the metal solid, or plated?
Solid gold. MERVAUX does not use plated, gold filled or vermeil metal, so the metal here is solid all the way through. The gross weight and the metal weight are both listed in the details table on this page.
What are the specifications of this piece?
Total diamond weight 7.23 ct. Shape emerald. Clarity VVS2. The full breakdown, including every stone in the piece, is in the details table on this page.
Is the diamond IGI certified?
Yes. This piece is IGI certified. IGI issues a Laboratory Grown Diamond Report, and the report number for the stone is listed with the stone details on this page, so it can be looked up against IGI's own records.
Does MERVAUX ship free in the United States?
Shipping inside the United States is free. MERVAUX ships from Palo Alto, California, and currently ships to United States addresses only.
Can I return it if it is not right?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unworn and in its original packaging with proof of purchase. Email sunny@xdiamondinc.com to start a return; once it is approved MERVAUX sends a return shipping label, and the refund goes back to the original payment method within 10 business days.
