Setting an H color oval
An H is the point on the scale where the metal starts making the decision. In platinum or white gold it reads as faint warmth at the two points; in yellow or rose gold that warmth stops being visible at all, because there is nothing cold beside it to measure against. A bezel does the same job, wrapping the girdle in metal so the eye reads the outline rather than the color at the ends.
Reading the numbers
1.44 is the middle of the oval range and the ratio most people picture when they picture an oval. At 63.9% the depth is on the deeper side, so this stone holds its brightness better than a shallow oval but spreads a little less for the same weight. The 61% table is modest, which returns light in smaller and more frequent flashes.

Is H color noticeably warm?
Not on its own. H is near colorless, and the warmth is visible mainly beside a D or E under white light. Against yellow gold it disappears.
What length to width ratio is best for an oval?
1.35 to 1.50 is the range most people find balanced. Below that an oval starts reading round, above it starts reading narrow. This one is 1.44.
Is VVS2 worth paying for at five carats?
Inclusions get easier to find as a stone gets larger, so high clarity does more work at five carats than at one. What separates VVS from VS is still only visible at ten times magnification.
