Why an emerald cut for blue

A step cut sends light back in broad planes instead of scattering it into small flashes, and colored stones are usually cut this way for a reason: scattering dilutes color, planes hold it. The long open table is where the blue actually reads. The two tapered side stones are colorless, which gives the eye a reference point and makes the center look bluer than it would alone.

Reading the numbers

SI1 is the one grade here to understand rather than skim. A step cut shows its interior the way a window does, so clarity reads more plainly than it would in a brilliant cut of the same grade. The IGI report plots where the inclusions sit; ask us for it before you decide, because in this shape position matters more than the grade letter.

Common questions

What makes a lab grown diamond blue?

Boron present during growth. It is the same mechanism that colors blue diamonds formed in the earth, and it is graded on the fancy color scale by hue and saturation rather than on the D to Z scale.

Does SI1 clarity matter in an emerald cut?

More than it would in a brilliant. Step facets give an inclusion fewer places to disappear into, so where the inclusion sits on the report matters as much as the grade itself.

What are the two side stones?

Tapered colorless diamonds, 0.94 ct for the pair. They follow the straight edges of the emerald cut, which is why this shape takes tapered sides better than a rounded center would.

Questions about this piece

Is this a lab grown diamond or a mined diamond?
Lab grown. Every diamond MERVAUX sells is grown in a laboratory rather than mined. It is the same material as a mined diamond, graded on the same scale, and the carat, color and clarity on this page are read exactly the way they would be on a mined stone.
Is the metal solid, or plated?
Solid 18K Two-Tone Gold. MERVAUX does not use plated, gold filled or vermeil metal, so the metal here is solid all the way through. The gross weight and the metal weight are both listed in the details table on this page.
What are the specifications of this piece?
Total diamond weight 11.7 ct. Shape emerald. Clarity SI1. Set in solid 18K Two-Tone Gold. The full breakdown, including every stone in the piece, is in the details table on this page.
Is the diamond IGI certified?
Yes. This piece is IGI certified. IGI issues a Laboratory Grown Diamond Report, and the report number for the stone is listed with the stone details on this page, so it can be looked up against IGI's own records.
Does MERVAUX ship free in the United States?
Shipping inside the United States is free. MERVAUX ships from Palo Alto, California, and currently ships to United States addresses only.
