Why an emerald cut for blue
A step cut sends light back in broad planes instead of scattering it into small flashes, and colored stones are usually cut this way for a reason: scattering dilutes color, planes hold it. The long open table is where the blue actually reads. The two tapered side stones are colorless, which gives the eye a reference point and makes the center look bluer than it would alone.
