Setting a squarer emerald cut

At 1.49 the outline is closer to a square than most emerald cuts, so a thin band suits it better than a wide one: the narrower the shank, the more of the stone reads as length. A G takes warmth from its surroundings, which makes yellow gold a deliberate choice here rather than a compromise. The metal and the stone agree instead of competing.

Reading the numbers

At 62.2% this is shallower than most emerald cuts, so it spreads wider face-up for its weight and gives up some of the depth that a deeper stone builds into the step pattern. The 59% table is narrow, which leaves more of the steps themselves visible around the edge and produces more contrast between the bright and dark planes.

Common questions

What is the difference between an emerald cut and an Asscher?

An Asscher is square, usually 1.00 to 1.05, with the same step facets. An emerald cut is rectangular. At 1.49 this is clearly an emerald cut, on the squarer side of the range.

Does a shallow emerald cut lose anything?

It trades depth for spread. The same weight covers more finger, and the corridor of steps you see looking down is shorter than in a deep stone.

Is G a good color for a step cut?

Step cuts show body color more readily than brilliants, because there is less faceting to break it up. G is in the near colorless band and reads white, particularly against yellow metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this a lab grown diamond or a mined diamond?
Lab grown. Every diamond MERVAUX sells is grown in a laboratory rather than mined. It is the same material as a mined diamond, graded on the same scale, and the carat, color and clarity on this page are read exactly the way they would be on a mined stone.
Is the metal solid, or plated?
Solid gold. MERVAUX does not use plated, gold filled or vermeil metal, so the metal here is solid all the way through. The gross weight and the metal weight are both listed in the details table on this page.
What are the specifications of this piece?
Total diamond weight 7.26 ct. Shape emerald. Clarity VVS2. The full breakdown, including every stone in the piece, is in the details table on this page.
Is the diamond IGI certified?
Yes. This piece is IGI certified. IGI issues a Laboratory Grown Diamond Report, and the report number for the stone is listed with the stone details on this page, so it can be looked up against IGI's own records.
Does MERVAUX ship free in the United States?
Shipping inside the United States is free. MERVAUX ships from Palo Alto, California, and currently ships to United States addresses only.
Can I return it if it is not right?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unworn and in its original packaging with proof of purchase. Email sunny@xdiamondinc.com to start a return; once it is approved MERVAUX sends a return shipping label, and the refund goes back to the original payment method within 10 business days.
